The Lunar New Year Snake was developed at Amigo&Amigo for Vivid Lighting festival Sydney. The installation plays on the traditional art of Chinese kite-making and also features the Chinese happiness symbols in the eyes, as a symbol of good fortune for the coming year. Internal LED lights slowly alternate from dark to bright interacting with the woven mesh scales giving the snake a playful and light personality. Suspended in Circular Quay, as the public makes the walk from the train station to the opera house the Snake is an entry marker to Vivid festival where families can meet and get a sense of what’s to come.

Basic samples were produced to communicate the design intent to the fabricator. The body of the snake was constructed in modules consisting of laser cut aluminum plate and round tube to stiffen the body. Modules were
then bolded together in sections then clad with wire mesh scales. The snake’s head was a 2 part fiberglass mould.
