5:30 Lounge Chair

BTD 2015

Encapsulating minimalist design, the 5:30 chair range explores robust structures through simple forms that create a dynamic flow through the body of work. The 5:30 seating range works with the proportions of 50×8 & 30×5 flat bar in the context of a lounge and dining chair. 50×8 being the lounge version, and 30×8 for dining or more mobile settings. For this project I was responsible for concept and design development, prototyping, and fabrication.

Design development & prototyping

This project took on a very hands-on design approach in its development, as we were working with a limited tool kit so many of the joining techniques and assembly methods were explored during fabrication through trial and error. Early versions of the design incorporated woven wire mesh as the seating material. This was phased
out as the wire mesh was difficult to work with, we needed a material that had more elasticity to make production easier. Introducing leather as the seating material worked well as it had enough elasticity making the construction of the chairs easier. Leather also showed it had enough strength that it wouldn’t tear at the joints when tested.
